XI chapter participated in the Kauaʻi 13th Annual STEPS Parent-Child Fair on Sat. April 11 with an activity table to engage early learners. Sponsored by PATCH, DOE Early intervention, & Good Beginnings Alliance, many local agencies and preschools participate to showcase services available and best practice activities in support early health and learning. Jeannie Odo, ETA chapter and Cathy Shanks, PATCH are longtime organizers of this event which has grown in attendance over the years.
Held at Kukui Grove Shopping Center Food Court, dozens of activity and information tables encircle the area while various school and community groups entertain from the stage. Keiki and families move around tables gathering information, talking story with vendors and engaging in make it- take it and other hands on activities to the delight of local keiki.
XI sisters, otherwise known as "fishwives" guided fisherfolk who used hashi poles with magnets to catch various colors of fish and then matching the color, number or pattern on their "net". Mahalo to fishwives: Cinthy Kagawa, Sherry Walker, Candace Tabuchi, Naoko Ho, Kathy Carveiro, Rene Takanishi, Maureen Fodale, and Cherish Mexia. A special thanks to Cherish's daughter, Jubilee, who worked along side XI to assist with all aspects of this activty. Thanks also to Jeannie Odo, ETA and Cathy Shanks for continuing this important annual event for our island.

Presentation: Education Watch at the 2014 Legislature
by Janet Mason, Legislative Chair & Valerie McFarland, Education Chair; League of Women Voters
XI and Eta chapters were treated to a highly informative session related to pertinent educational issues to be determined by the CON AM election fall 2014. Top five education bills include MasterPlan for school facilities, refining Charter School Law, public input for Board of Education, mandatory Kindergarten, public funding for Preschool. While all are important, ensuring a continued public participation in BOE meetings allows for the will of the people to participate in determining educational policy. DO SIGN UP@ Legislative site: www.capitol.hawaii.gov for information and to let your voice be heard.
Perhaps, the most critical issues are regarding Mandatory Kindergarten and the funding of Preschools. While there is widespread (82%) support for subsidized preschool, concerns need to be addressed. There is concern for how to frame funding for private preschools. Even greater is the concern for using NAEYC rather than elementary/CORE standards for Preschool and Kindergarten. Most kindergarten & preschools do not have PK-3 licensure, degree or endorsement. How to implement a quality and developmentally appropriate educational experience based on NAEYC standards requires continued awareness and involvement by parents and educators in BOE policy. PLEASE visit the website and stay involved! We, rather than politicians should determine the educational experience for our Keiki!

May 4 - Scholarship Award and Service Project
Xi chapter promotes literacy by gathering new and gently used books to donate to local doctors' and dentists' offices. Not every youngster owns an electronic book reader! Everyone had fun reminiscing about classic children's stories and enjoyed looking at all the wonderful books before bundling them up to be delivered.
